The FIFA World Cup, commonly known as The World Cup, is the most prestigious tournament in international football. Many footballing legends like Pele, Charlton, Ronaldo, Maradona and Baggio have made their name and showcased their skill at this tournament.
The Socceroos proved their doubters wrong by finishing second in their group which included Brazil, Croatia and Japan, and in doing so became the first Oceanic nation to reach the knockout stage.
The Socceroos showed what they were made of with a gritty performance in their Round 16 match against eventual champions Italy. A controversial 90th minute penalty proved costly for the Socceroos and ended their dreams.
In 2010, history will be made as this will be the first time that the tournament will be hosted by a nation in the Confederation of African Football, leaving the Oceania Football Confederation as the only FIFA Confederation never to have hosted the event.
As the Socceroos now qualify through the Asian Football Confederation, they have a great chance to make it to South Africa as they are one of the 10 remaining teams battling out for 4.5 spots.
There have been only 7 World Cup winners in history, who will win in South Africa? Will it be the flamboyant 5 time winners Brazilians? Or can the Azzurri defend their title and win it all again?
